SharePoint 2010 includes a great deal of new functionality that changes the way applications are developed.  This presentation will give a broad overview and some examples of how development has changed in SharePoint for 2010, and the guidance available in the patterns and practices Developing Applications for SharePoint 2010 guidance. 

One of the areas of the guidance is around data in SharePoint, and we will explore in depth changes in this area, particularly with the ability to build relationships and constraints between SharePoint lists and the introduction of Business Connectivity Services containing external content types and external lists. 

This presentation provides insights to understand these different models, when a model is appropriate, and help you make decide between SharePoint lists and external data sources as the data store for your SharePoint application. It also provides detailed insights into data access techniques, and when to use a technique, and understanding the pitfalls and tradeoffs of the different techniques.  Source code examples of the different principals will be reviewed.

Chris Keyser works in the Patterns & Practices team at Microsoft developing SharePoint guidance for solution architects and developers.  He has worked at Microsoft for seven years with other positions as a Group Program Manager in Office for Duet, and as the lead architect for the Global ISV team in DPE.   Prior to joining Microsoft Chris worked as a developer and manager at a series of startups on web, server, and embedded system development.   The Patterns & Practices SharePoint team has shipped the third release of SharePoint guidance for SharePoint 2010.
